After returning the human to his home, AJ had returned to the nest. He pretended that everything was normal, smiling when it was needed and eventually dismissing himself to his coffin right before day break. His rest was undisturped and he rose once night fell. He had wanted to go check on the human and make sure he was alright, though he had no doubt he wouldn’t be alright.
“The Sheriff requests you.” The voice startled AJ and he turned his head to see Christina leaning against the door frame. He was about to ask what the older vampire needed but knew better. Besides, Christina usually didn’t have a clue. He gave her a nod and indicated he’d be there in a minute. Turning back towards his chest of drawers, he pushed the top one in after grabbing a bandana. He tied it around his head and decided he shouldn’t make the Sheriff wait to long or else there may be hell to pay – literally.
The small vampire walked down the halls of the house and down towards the office where he figured Kevin would be waiting. He knocked lightly. Some shuffling could be heard on the otherside of the door and then finally it was opened. Christina stood in the doorway, fixing her blonde hair. Her smile gave AJ some clue as to what might have been going on moments prior.
“Who is it?” A deep voice asked behind her. The girl turned her head, made a motion with her head and then opened the door.
AJ stepped inside and glanced around the neatly kept office then towards the desk where the Sheriff sat. He bowed his head a little then moved to take a seat when instructed. His senses told him that Christina was perched right behind him.
“Leave us,” Kevin told her.
Clearing his throat, AJ shifted in his seat and waited for Kevin’s eyes to stop following Christina out of the room and focus back on him. But then again, maybe that wasn’t such a bad idea. The younger vampire was growing more nervous, afraid what might be said or be known about actions he had taken in the past.
“So…”
The tension in the air was growing thicker. AJ shifted once more as Kevin leaned forward in his seat to rest his folded hands on the table. His eyes were staring at AJ, reading him.
“I was given a piece of news a week ago,” Kevin stated, cutting right to the chase. “I was told that a vampire in my nest may have interests in something that wasn’t….well vampire. My warning had suggest that I investigate and find out what exactly the movitives of this vampire might be. So I did.”
AJ swallowed hard, doing his best not to peel his eyes away from his Sheriff’s.
“It turns out that this vampire has been following a human. If he was merely to study him for future use, that would be one thing. Or if perhaps, this particular vampire was watching him to find the perfect opportunity to feed when the town folk wouldn’t suspect a thing if the human went missing. But no!”
Kevin’s voice was getting louder. So loud in fact that AJ was sure vampires in the next room over could probably hear a mumbling loud and clear. Luckily the walls were thick to jumble up the words, but still it was embarassing to know that his nestmates were aware of his scolding.
“Do you know what he did Alexander?” Kevin asked. Yet without waiting, he continued, “He talked to him. This vampire in my nest tried to be friends with a human and then..saved the human’s life. A vampire saving a human…Explain this to me!”
The demand caused AJ to blink a few times.
“I don’t kno…”
“Don’t start off by lying to me McLean!” Kevin shouted. “I will lock you in the silver coffin for a hundred years if you don’t begin to tell the truth. I am in no mood to be patient with you right now.”
AJ nodded. He was a fool to think he could lie to his Sheriff and get away with it.
“I love him,” AJ said honestly in a soft voice. “I’d do anything for him.”
The room after his words was deadly silent. The Sheriff didn’t move a muscle and AJ lowered his eyes, afraid to look at him. Finally the older vampire spot and AJ didn’t feel any regret.
“15 nights in the silver coffin.”
AJ nodded to acknowledge his punishment.
Kevin stared at the younger vampire and put his hands in his lap. “I’m giving you a more lenient punishment; more so because we are trying to be equals with humans but that doesn’t give us any reason to go around lying about loving them. You and I both know vampires don’t have emotions. What you feel for this human is something you are fantasing about perhaps a shred of your former human self that is trying to spark itself alive. Whatever it is, you need to get rid of it and rid of it fast. I was comtemplating give you a more harsher punishment due the fact you were going to try and simply lie your way out of our conversation. But you are a good employee McLean. For hundreds of years you have served me without a problem and I’m willing to acknowledge that. Just don’t let it happen again.
“Thank you sir,” was all AJ said before he rose, bowed his head towards the Sheriff and made his way out of the door.
