It was a few days after Aaron’s party when Nick found himself walking down the sidewalk to the bakery that his mother had purchased five years ago. The building was downtown and the bakery itself was a staple in the history of their community. No matter how many times he thought about selling it, he always thought back to the day his mom signed the papers to take over and was more excited than Nick could ever remember. Shoving his hands into the pockets of his worn out jeans, he walked in through the open doorway and found a few customers sitting at the large booths eating goodies. The smell of fresh bread filled the area and Nick could see Britney behind the counter cleaning up from the lunch crowd. She must have let Mandy head home as the younger girl was nowhere in sight.
“Hey,” Nick greeted once he was up at the counter.
Britney turned around, flour all over her pink apron and some in her hair. She looked beautiful. Her face lit up when she saw Nick standing there.
“Hey you,” She greeted, brushing some flour off of her hands before wiping them on her apron and walking over to the cash register.
“Busy day?” Nick asked curiously.
The girl shrugged and pointed towards the few people in the restaurant. “Those are the last ones probably till people come in to get sandwiches for dinner. Why? Do we need to go over paperwork or anything?”
Nick shook his head and told her that he didn’t come by for paperwork. Britney gave him a curious look, wondering what was going on with him if he just stopped by for a chit chat.
“I wanted to talk to you about something. It’s nothing important.”
Britney could tell he was brushing something off, something that was obviously important to him. He wouldn’t have come cross town to merely talk to her, well not any more at least. And if it was really important, he would have just stopped by to talk to Brian. Curiosity was getting the best of her and Britney waved him around – wanting him to come around the corner and meet her in the office at the back of the building. She asked the customers if they were okay and just give a holler if she was needed. Leading the way to through the kitchen, Britney sat down in the large chair behind the desk – as if she owned the place instead of vice versa. Nick didn’t mind. He took a seat on the metal foldout chair and sighed. Running his hand through his hair, Nick looked over at her.
“Just spill it.”
It was just like Brit to get straight to the point. Nick always loved that about her. He nodded and started to tell her about when AJ showed up at his house. Nick continued on and went through the conversations they’ve had. He watched her face change when he mentioned how he went hunting in the woods and AJ was there to save him with his blood and bring him home. Britney was obviously mad that Nick didn’t tell her had gotten hurt but didn’t say a word as Nick continued on with his story, ending with the night at the bar after she had left. Nick was sure to tell Britney about how AJ endured punishment after saving him.
“He wants me to go check it out but I don’t know if I can face vampires I don’t know. I mean…they killed my family and here I’m debating on whether or not it’s a good idea to go into an establishment they own and run.”
Britney was quiet for a little and then finally started to speak after much thought. She reached across the small desk and picked up Nick’s hand. She took a deep breath and looked at his blue eyes.
“You need to stop thinking about what anybody else thinks…what will make them happy or what will be the best for everybody. What do you want to do? Are you still angry with vampires? All of them? Because it sounds like you might have found a friend in this AJ guy. You can’t blame every vampire for your family’s death, no matter how much I know you want to.”
Nick nodded and was glad he decided to come talk to Britney. She was right.
“I think I’ll check it out. Thanks Brit.” Nick gave her a smile and stood up to kiss her cheek before he took his leave.
