The words that AJ had said left Nick spending sleepless nights staring up at the ceiling. He didn’t understand how a vampire could love, let alone love him. No matter how much he pretended he hated vampires, Nick knew that some of them weren’t so bad. Yet he wasn’t about to believe that he’d ever love one. It was late one night when he pulled up to his best friend’s bar and walked inside. He took his usual seat and was given a beer without a word being said.
“Nick you need to forget it,” Brian said in a gentle voice. “Vampires say shit all the time, doesn’t mean it’s true.”
The older man was trying to help his friend but he feared it was too far gone. Nick had thought over it and thought over till it was nearly beaten into the ground. There wasn’t anything Brian could do. Then an idea popped into his head and he hit the bar counter enthusiastically.
“I need a bartender,” He said with a big grin. “You’re hired.”
“What?” Nick asked, his eyes going wide from the other end of the beer bottle. He pulled the glass from his lips and put it back on the coaster. “I’m not looking for a job Bri.”
“Sure you are,” Brian told him. “You don’t do anything but think about this vampire and his proclaimed love for you. It’s time you got busy with other things and I could use your help. I might even be able to take a night off.”
Nick could see the excitement dancing in Brian’s eyes and knew there wasn’t any way he’d be able to talk himself out of this. Reluctantly he nodded and finished off his beer. He handed the bottle back over towards Brian.
“No more,” Nick said, waving his hand as Brian prepared to hand him another. “If I’m going to spending my nights here, I want to have one more night of peace at home.”
Brian laughed. “You talk like hanging out here is a bad thing.”
Nick smirked and tipped his imaginary hat before grabbing his coat. He went out the door and straight to his truck. Home wasn’t where he wanted to go and so he made a detour, passing by familiar buildings before pulling up in front of a house he knew far too well.
‘That’s odd,’ He thought, seeing his brother’s car parked in the driveway.
Nick parked near the curb and climbed out. He smoothed out his shirt and walked slowly up the front walk to the door. His finger was hovering over the doorbell and his chest heaved with each deep breath he took. Why was he so nervous? He pushed the button then held his breath. Shuffling could be heard on the other side and Nick wondered for a moment what was going on. Finally the door opened.
“Hey Nick…” Mandy greeted, standing in the doorway. It appeared she was trying to keep Nick from seeing something but spotted his brother on the couch over the short girl’s head. Nick looked from his brother back down to Mandy, who was blushing a deep red.
“Is Britney here?” Nick finally asked. He wouldn’t embarrass the two any further but did notice his brother get up and walk over to the door.
“She is,” Mandy nodded. Aaron was behind her and leaned down to give her a little peck on the cheek.
“I need to get going. Early day tomorrow at the shop,” He said, flashing a smile at his brother in hopes he wouldn’t get chewed out too much. Mandy bid him a goodnight and went off to get her sister.
“Oh Nick…” Aaron said, stopping just past Nick on the front porch. “I kind of told Mandy that she could work at the shop in the office since we don’t really have anybody. She doesn’t think she can stand working with Brit at the bakery any longer.”
Nick wasn’t happy that Aaron began making decisions without his input but he understood why his little brother did so. The way he was looking at Mandy showed Nick all he wanted to know about how Aaron felt about her. He nodded his head and whispered that they’d talk about it later. Aaron gave a nod of his own and followed the path the rest of the way to the car.
“Nick…hey,” Britney greeted walking to the door. Nick was brought inside and he wiped his feet off. His eyes went to the TV screen to see what Aaron and Mandy had been watching. For a moment he had forgotten that Mandy lived with Britney in the little house across town, but that moment was gone and Nick was thankful Aaron hadn’t been over to see his ex-girlfriend. Nick finally looked back at Britney’s expectant face.
“Sorry,” He said softly, nervously running his hand through his hair. “I just came by to talk…well see you I guess. I should go.”
“No. It’s okay,” Britney said. Her small hand grabbed his elbow and lead him out of the front room. She pulled him down the hallway to her large master bedroom. The room was all lit up with different colored lights and candles. She hit the switch and dimmed the room a little. Letting go of Nick’s arm, the girl sat down on her bed with a bounce and looked back at him, waiting to see what he’d do or say.
“So what did you want to talk about?” She finally asked.
Nick shrugged and walked over to sit beside her. The heater kicked on and Nick removed his thick jacket. Tossing it over a nearby chair, Nick looked back at the blond girl. He had missed spending quiet nights with her, just watching television or listening to their favorite bands. Life just wasn’t the same any more and it was because of the vampires. It was then Nick decided to tell Britney all about what AJ had said, and done. He spoke about JC and Justin as well. The whole time he spoke, Britney remained silent like she always did until he was finished. She had questions, just like anybody would and Nick would answer the best he could. The night slowly wore on and Nick needed something else to talk about, something that didn’t have to deal with the way he felt whenever mentioning the vampire’s love for him.
“I missed you,” He blurted out suddenly. Reaching for her hand, he held it tightly between the two of his and just stared at them for a minute before taking a peak at her face. She had a small smile showing and used her other hand to reach out and brush some of his hair away.
“I’ve missed you too Nick,” She whispered honestly.
Slowly, she leaned up and kissed the corner of his mouth. It was enough for Nick. He turned his head and caught her lips in a heated kiss. Using his hand that was holding hers, he pulled her closer and intensified their kiss. His other hand slid up her side and around to her back just under her shirt. Her soft warm skin, something he had missed too much, felt like it was on fire. He needed more. He needed to be close to her, as close as he possibly be. The emotions soaring through his system were still raw from talking about AJ. Nick took her response as a sign she wanted this too and slowly leaned against her till her back was on the bed. It had been a long time since had been with a woman and could already feel his jeans tightening. His kisses started down her throat as he worked on getting her shirt unbuttoned. Britney’s moans encouraged him to keep going.
Soon they were both naked and under the covers, kissing and touching wherever they could reach. Both were falling into that familiar route of their past just as if they had never been apart. Nick held her in his arms as he mad love to the girl he believed was the only person he could ever love. And yet when they were finished and laying in each other’s arms and Britney whispered how much she still loved him, Nick found himself unable to return the sentiment.
