Chapter Nineteen

“Are you sure you want to go?” Nick asked the three people standing in the front area of his house. He saw a few nods and one shrug. “We don’t have to go.”

“You remember what the vampire said,” Lance reminded. He was dressed in what he considered his finest club clothes and didn’t want to miss this opportunity for the world. “If you don’t go, the Sheriff will be pissed off. I don’t think you want to start pissing off vampires Nick.”

“He’s right,” Jessica spoke up. She was only doing so because she wanted to spend the evening with Nick. In her head, he invited her to go along because he wanted her there. It would be hard for her to understand that he did in fact only invite her because she basically begged to go when she found out Nick would be partying – which means drinking. Her warped brain was hoping he’d get drunk and she’d some how get the privilege of taking him home. She could forget about how much she hated vampires for one night, if that meant being with Nick Carter. Needless to say, Jessica was very well aware of a problem. Nick also asked Britney to go and much to Jessica’s dislike, the other girl accepted.

“So let’s go already,” Britney said, putting her hands out to kind of push everybody out the door. “He said 9 o’clock sharp correct? It’s ten after 8 already.”

Nick nodded, she was right and screamed to his brother in the other room that they were leaving. He also made sure Aaron knew to behave himself. Mandy was staying over to watch movies and Nick didn’t want to think about what else they may end up doing. Britney gave her goodbyes and the four of them were soon loading into separate vehicles. Everybody knew that Lance would disperse from the group as soon as they were all inside, so he was the first to insist on taking his own car. Jessica didn’t want to be separated from Nick but when it was mentioned she lived on the other side of town, she reluctantly agreed she’d drive herself so nobody would have to drive her all that way. Aside from keeping her from Nick, it put a damper on her mood as well. She wouldn’t get to drink as much as she wanted.

Lance pulled out of the driveway, obviously in a hurry to get there. Jessica started up her car and put the heater on as she watched Nick climb into Britney’s car. She felt jealousy bubbling in her veins and was doing her best to keep from hitting the gas pedal and blowing straight into the driver’s side door. Taking a deep breath and counting back from ten always seemed to help and so Jessica did so as she waited. Once she was given the signal, she pulled out behind Britney and Nick to follow them to the club.

Traffic was heavy on the way to Bite and everybody was a little irritable once they got parked. Lance was just about jumping out of his skin with excitement. He had been to the club once before but never on a night that was this busy. The fact that Nick had VIP also didn’t hurt.

The four of them walked to the front of the line and Nick gave the bouncer his name as well as handed over his VIP pass. Humans were lined up against the building clear to the corner and Nick suspected to the other side. Many weren’t being let in as this was primarily a vampire function. Though, Nick suspected, if a vampire walked by and saw a “tasty” human – they would be brought inside, hence all the barely clothed women hovering near the entrance.

Nick was allowed to pass and the small group walked in towards the main entrance. The two girls were wide eyed as they took in all the lights and people moving about. Giving Christina a nod as they past, Nick lead the group through the large doors. People were crammed on the dance floor, vampires and humans moving to the beat. Everybody was taking in the sight as a waitress came up to offer them a cocktail. Everybody took one except Nick. He had told Brit it was okay if she drank, he’d be the sober one to drive the two home.

“This place is awesome,” Lance awed, still staring wide eyed at everything. It was enough to make Nick chuckle.

After a few minutes of silence between them, Lance couldn’t take it any more. He downed the rest of his drink and then looked at the other three. Pointing to the dance floor, he said he was heading in that direction and would see everybody later. He bolted from his spot and the others laughed. Nick looked at Britney and kind of gave a shrug. Words couldn’t be said that’d do Lance justice.

“So ladies…” Nick said looking between Jessica and Britney. “What would you like to do?”

Britney noticed the smirk on Jessica’s face and she discreetly rolled her eyes. To watch this girl’s obsession was nauseating, they were too old for stuff like that. Neither of them said a word, so Nick pointed towards the stairs that lead up to the VIP area where they could sit and just relax. The straightest path to the stairs was blocked by upwards of fifty people so Nick started to lead the way, going all the way around. It involved pushing past some really big vampires and squeezing through packs of girls giggling about the latest pair of pumps they purchased. Ten minutes went by and Nick finally got to the stairs only to be greeted by Christina.

“The Sheriff wants to see you,” She told him in that ice cool voice of hers.

Nick looked back at the two girls following him and then back at the vampire. “Why?”

“He doesn’t need to give a reason.” Christina was a little irritated with this human, who didn’t seem to grasp the concept that the Sheriff didn’t need to give reasons behind his orders. “Your friends can go upstairs and wait for you. They’ll be fine without you there.”

She motioned with her hand to get the girls moving and grabbed Nick’s arm. “You’re coming with me.”

Nick didn’t have time to protest as the girls began walking up the stairs right when Christina pulled him away. He turned his attention to the beautiful vampire and followed her back through the crowd towards the front entrance. Hoping that they wouldn’t have to leave the building, Nick was happy to see them turn down a hidden hallway that was barely lit. Christina walked to the end and turned the corner then pushed Nick towards a door.

“He’s waiting.” And with those words, she turned on her heels and went back to her post at the front entrance.

Taking a deep breath, Nick reached up and knocked on the door. He heard a deep voice tell him to enter and Nick turned the knob. Two security guards, both covered in tattoos, greeted him and gave him the once over before allowing him to pass by. After closing the door behind him, Nick walked towards the sitting area. The room looked like an employee lounge and Nick wondered if that was in fact what it was.

“Thank you for coming human,” The vampire said from his perch on an old fashioned chair near the far wall. “I would have suggested meeting some place more private…perhaps my office at the nest but I needed to be here for appearance purposes. You understand.”

Nick nodded as if he agreed, but he didn’t get it. He wanted to know who this guy was and why he needed to see him. Not stupid by any means, Nick was going to assume it was the Sheriff but wanted confirmation first. The vampire stood up and Nick was surprised how tall he was. He stayed in his place near the couch and kept his eyes as the vampire drew closer.

“I suppose you are wanting to know who I am,” The vampire said. He reached out his hand, used to human customs. “My name is Kevin Richardson and I’m the Sheriff over this area as far as vampires are concerned.”

Putting his hand against the vampire’s cold skin made him jump a little but Nick held it together and shook it in a greeting.

“Why did you want to see me sir?” Nick asked cautiously.

Kevin chuckled. He liked the human referring to him as sir, it showed respect or perhaps fear. Motioning towards the couch, the two were seated and Kevin crossed his leg to rest his foot on his knee. He had to think about what to say carefully as to not scare the human.

“It has come to my attention that you are causing quite a ruckus with my vampires,” He told the human. “I’m wondering why that is.”

Nick was flabbergasted. He had no idea why the vampires were fighting over him. There wasn’t anything Nick could recall that he did to make them act that way. His face must have shown confusion because Kevin started to smirk.

“Two of them in particular have shown…interest in you,” The Sheriff continued, picking his words carefully. “I wanted to meet you myself and see if I could figure it out. So far nothing but I’m sure something about you stands out or else I wouldn’t have this problem.”

“I’m sorry Sheriff but I can’t think of any reason as to why your vampires are acting this way,” Nick said immediately. He was starting to feel a little uncomfortable being with this powerful vampire with his two burly security guards directly behind them.

Kevin laughed. This human was far too amusing. “If anything comes to mind, please do enlighten me. As for now, Benji and Joel will escort you back to the party. I hope you enjoy the evening.”

At the mention of their names, the two security guards stepped forward and peered over the back of the couch at Nick. He rose to his feet and bid the Sheriff a good evening. It was silent going down the hallway except for the echo of footsteps. Nick gave the two vampires a smile when he was back in the main entrance area. He wanted to go find the girls and see if they were ready to leave.

If it was even possible, more people were on the dance floor and Nick had a hard time getting through them to the VIP stairs. A few times, girls would pull on his shirt and try to persuade him to dance. He’d politely decline and keep pushing his way through. Finally he reached the stairs and climbed up to the more secluded area. When he made his way to the table where Britney was sitting, he flopped in the other seat and ran a hand over his face.

“How’d it go?” She asked, pushing the ice in her empty glass around with her straw.

Nick shrugged, not really wanting to get into it. He glanced over his shoulder and then over the room.

“Where’s Jess?” He wondered out loud.

Britney chuckled. “She got tired of waiting for you and when I told her to shut it after she went off about how adorable your hair was…she left to go find something more productive to do.”

Nick made a face at Britney’s words, which made the girl laugh even harder.

“Well..are you having fun?” Nick finally asked.

It was Britney’s turn to shrug. “It’s okay I guess. I thought it’d be a little different. I was looking forward to getting trashed but I’m just not..in the mood I guess.”

“You want to leave?”

“Sure,” She said, grabbing her purse. Nick went to the bar and paid her tab before leading her back down the stairs.

They made it out of the club within fifteen minutes and Britney said she was okay to drive. Nick eyed her carefully causing the girl to laugh. She had only two drinks and was perfectly sober. After passing Nick’s made up sobriety test, Britney started the car and drove Nick back to his house leaving the two others at the club to party the night away.
