Chapter Seven

It felt like it had only been minutes but in reality, Nick woke up and it was pitch black outside. He shook his head free of cobwebs and then glanced around his bedroom. Everybody has had that feeling once or twice. You wake up, thinking that it is later or earlier than it really is and proceed to get up in a hurry because you’re late. Nick proceeded to do just that. He had a meeting with the bank at 8:30 to discuss the sale of the family business’. With one jump, he was into his jeans and buttoning them up as he walked bare chested across his bedroom and out the door. It was then he glanced at his watched as he got it situated on his wrist. The date read out along with the two letters that let him know that it was still night. His appointment had long since come and gone.

Sighing, he slumped into the closest chair. He leaned forward and put his hands over his face, groaning a bit. It had to have been the longest sleep he had ever had but yet couldn’t quite remember why he had slept all day. Then it dawned on him. Everything came back in an instant. The fall, his injuries…the vampire. AJ had been there in the woods. Nick’s mind whirled. Had AJ been the one to hurt him? No. Nick knew that the vampire had only been there to save him.

He got up and walked into the kitchen. His head was filled of thoughts, flashing back towards what had happened the day before. The thought of drinking blood from a vampire made his stomach knot up but Nick knew that it had saved his life. Cracking open a beer, he sat down at the breakfast bar and stared into the dark kitchen. It wasn’t that long ago when the house was full of a family, laughter and love. His blue eyes closed once more and he put his head down on his arm, his hand holding tightly to his bottle. To say he missed his family was an understatement, yet why was it that as soon as he started to think of them images of AJ started to flash into his mind? Nick lifted his head, shook it a bit and took another drink. He let out a gasp and looked back around the room.

Perhaps vampires weren’t so bad, he finally concluded with a shrug. Woah, what the fuck?

Nick was back on his feet and began to pace a little. Had that thought really gone through his mind? Vampires had killed his family and now he was thinking that they weren’t so bad? He was losing his mind. He must have his head harder than he originally thought.

With that thought, he finished off his beer and tossed it into the recycle bin. Making his way back down the hallway, he reentered his bedroom and went straight to his private bathroom. He stopped in front of the mirror and looked at himself. Still clad in just a pair of jeans and his watch, Nick looked at his naked chest. No marks of any kind. He tilted his head to the side and examined his neck. There wasn’t any marks on either side. A soft sigh escaped his lips and he looked down at the sink for a minute. The vampire blood had worked miracles, but that still didn’t repay the fact that the same creature had killed his family.

Yet it hadn’t been AJ that killed his family. Nick knew he couldn’t blame one vampire for another’s mistakes. Yet still, he was faced with a bitter taste when he thought about the subject. Just wanting to forget for a little while, he ripped his watch off and threw it onto the counter before walking back towards his bed. Halfway there, he dropped his jeans and slid his naked form under the sheets to sleep the rest of the night away.
