Chapter Seventeen

It had been almost three weeks since Nick had last seen AJ so when he saw the vampire on his doorstep, he was in fact surprised. He didn’t really want to see him but figured it wouldn’t hurt to let the guy explain himself. They were sitting in the living room and Nick apologized for not having any bottled blood for the vampire – whom insisted he didn’t need any. Nick looked around and then back at AJ sitting there perfectly still.

“So…”

AJ smiled at Nick’s nervousness, though he wished the human wasn’t still fearful of him.

“Nick relax,” AJ coaxed, reaching out to place his cold hand on Nick’s arm. “I’m not going to hurt you. I swear. I just wanted to talk to you, and well apologize.”

“Apologize?” Nick asked, his eyebrow lifting.

“Yeah,” AJ nodded. “I shouldn’t have come over the last time and said the things I did. You weren’t ready for that. I was out of line and I’m sorry. I was hoping that we could just work on being friends and forget all about what I said.”

Nick leaned back against the couch and let out a breath of air. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to forget what AJ told him, the weirdness of having a vampire falling in love you wasn’t something any human could ever forget.

As if reading his mind, AJ’s finger lightly rubbed Nick’s arm. “You know that I’m able to make you forget it right? That vampires possess certain powers that can convince a human to forget certain memories. I’m not going to do that because I cherish what little friendship we have developed in hopes that you’ll begin to want to learn more about me.”

Shock was written across his face, Nick couldn’t believe it. Vampires had super powers? Well, humans were fucked then in Nick’s mind. He sighed again and shrugged, giving in.

“I guess we can be friends…or work on it or whatever,” Nick said in a rush. His words seemed forced and AJ didn’t like it.

“Nick,” The vampire sighed. “If you honestly don’t want to, you don’t have to.”

Nick met the vampire’s eyes and shook his head. “No I want to. I just..you know my family was killed by vampires and this is just..I don’t know.”

“Scary?” AJ asked.

Staring at the vampire, Nick finally nodded. AJ scooted a little closer to him and reached out to gently brush the human’s cheek. He wished that Nick could understand how AJ would endure a thousand years in the silver coffin if it meant it’d keep him safe. Leaning over, AJ placed a sweet kiss on Nick’s lips and whispered, “You’ll always be safe with me.”

Nick was frozen. Thoughts were screaming in his head as he tried to grasp the idea that a vampire just kissed him. A male vampire at that. He wanted to scream out holy fuck but kept everything inside. He didn’t even move a muscle. Had he reacted? Nick wasn’t quite sure. He did, however, close his eyes. When he opened them, he saw AJ studying his face. Those eyes were asking if he had done the right thing.

“I’m kind of tired,” Nick lied. “You should probably go.”

AJ nodded and stood up. Nick walked him to the door and watched the vampire disappear out in the night. As Nick closed the door, he acknowledged the erotic pleasure that was coursing through his veins. It scared him more than the kiss.

He wasn’t going to be able to fall asleep any time soon and felt a little bad about lying to AJ but it was better then telling him to get the fuck out of his house. Flipping on the TV set, Nick found an old movie to watch. He got himself comfortable on the old couch and was soon wrapped up in the movie.

The film credits started to roll when Nick heard a light knock at the door. Feeling a little irritated that someone would be coming over at that hour, he stood up and made his way over to the door. He flung it open and was surprised to see Justin standing there.

“Justin…” Nick said.

“Hey Nick,” Justin smiled, entering the house. He looked around in the sort of way someone does in order to see if anybody else was there. Being satisfied that Nick was alone, Justin turned his attention back to the human.

“What are you doing here? How’d you know where I lived?” Nick asked after he closed the door.

Justin walked over to the couch and sat down. He patted the spot beside him and Nick walked over to join him. He began to tell the human that he asked Brian at the bar though both of them knew that Brian wouldn’t ever give out that kind of information. Nick disregarded it and let Justin continue on talking about how he was interested in him and wanted to learn how to fix cars.

“I’ve been around for hundreds of years and know how to do all kinds of things except fix automobiles. I was wondering if you could teach me. I can pay of course.”

Nick thought about it a minute and finally agreed, not seeing the downfall in teaching the vampire how to fix a car or two. Justin’s face lit up when Nick agreed and reached over to give the human a hug. All this vampire touching was starting to weird Nick out and Justin could sense it. It also gave him indication that AJ had been by earlier. The other vampire’s scent was also in the room and it was so strong that it almost made Justin sick.

“Maybe we can rebuild one someday,” Justin said in a hopeful voice. Nick shrugged and said that anything was possible.

The two talked for another good hour before Justin saw Nick yawning far too much and excused himself. He promised to call next time after Nick gave him his cell phone number. Of course Nick said it was alright, though he wished that all the vampires would begin using a telephone once in awhile. After saying goodnight to Justin, Nick closed up the house and headed to his bedroom leaving Justin on the porch.

“Alexander…” Justin said from where he stood on the porch. “I know you’re out here…waiting the human. Just know he is mine.”

AJ cursed under his breath. He didn’t think Justin would pick up on his scent so quickly. Moving around the house in the dark, AJ quickly made his way through the woods before he took off in a sprint to get back to the nest before Justin caught up to him. He didn’t want to start a brawl in the human’s back yard. Once at the nest, he jumped up the front steps and barged in through the front door. He ignored everybody that was seated there and went back to where he knew JC would be. Luckily Bite was closed for the night getting things fixed up for an up coming event.

“I fucking hate your brother,” AJ said as soon as he saw his best friend.

JC turned himself around and rolled his eyes. “Now what?” It was obvious he was getting tired of this quarrel between the two.

“He went to go see Nick…my human after I did. He was hugging him and talking for almost two hours. I know he’s up to no good. I just wish he’d leave my human alone. I don’t want any trouble to find this one.”

AJ was pacing back and forth. JC sighed and sat down in the nearest chair.

“Alex you’re going to have to talk to him.”

AJ laughed and shook his head. “I can’t talk to him. I can’t even stand to be under the same roof as him. I know he’s messing with Nick just to get in my head and fuck me up. I hope he realizes that he can’t ever feel for Nick as I do. That bastard can’t ever grasp the concept of love. I wish I could ki…”

“Watch yourself Alex,” JC scolded sternly. He rose to his feet and met his friend face to face. “That is still my brother and you know the Sheriff doesn’t take lightly to threats to another vampire in his nest let alone his child. You need to get your shit in order and deal with it. Ultimately it will be the human’s choice. You know this, yet you won’t allow yourself to come to terms with it.”

“I have yet to feel this way about another,” AJ confessed. “Neither while I was human nor now…as this.”

“If it is true love you feel for this human, you need to get it under control before you do something by the seat of your pants and end up in the coffin. If it is love, the ultimate punishment will be to put you there for a hundred years to ensure you’ll never see the face of this human again. Do you not realize Kevin has thought of that? It’d be a damn good solution to the problem you and Justin are rising.”

AJ snapped his mouth shut as he listened to his friend. It was true, the ultimate punishment was to be banded to the silver coffin until Nick’s time on earth ran out. AJ couldn’t begin to think about roaming the earth for all of eternity without one more moment in the human’s company.

“I’ve never seen another get it as bad as you but AJ…you need to get it together.”

Looking at JC, AJ simply nodded and left the room to go find something to eat, and to think.
