Chapter Sixteen

The diner was on the outskirts of town, far enough away from prying eyes. Nick wanted to go some place private but the man he was meeting with was hungry. He walked in to the unfamiliar restaurant and glanced around. He had met this man twice before at Brian’s and the night that he found his family dead but didn’t have too hard of a time tracking him down for a meeting. Finally spotting the older bearded man in a booth, Nick made his way over.

“Kirkpatrick,” Nick greeted, sliding into the empty side of the booth. “Thanks for meeting with me.”

Christopher wiped his mouth free of any leftover chicken fried steak and reached his hand out to shake Nick’s. Hesitantly, the blonde shook the hand and sat down at the table. He was handed a menu by a waitress passing by them on her way to the next booth over. Nick didn’t bother to say thank you, she wouldn’t have heard him any way. Chris went back to eating and Nick studied the menu for a moment. When the waitress was headed back towards the front, she stopped by and took Nick’s order before hurrying off to another waiting customer. Folding his hands, Nick looked across the table at Christopher who was still eating his early dinner. He waited patiently for a moment or two before he slouched back. Chris got the hint.

“What can I do for you Carter?” The older man asked, licking his fingers free of gravy. Nick tried to hold back his disgusted face.

“I want to know who killed my family.”

Christopher nodded. He had a feeling this would eventually surface. Licking his fork clean, he put it on his nearly empty plate and pushed it towards the edge of the table. Finally he was finished.

“And say you find out who killed your family…what are you going to do then?” The hunter asked. Humans had been killed by vampires for thousands of years. There was no competition. When a hungry or vengeful vampire wanted to feed, it will simply feed. Far too many people over the years have searched out Christopher’s help in tracking down certain vampires, and then wasn’t able to carry out any deed. Vampires always hear them coming up the driveway, or smell their fear just around the corner.

Nick shrugged. He wasn’t sure. Of course he could say the first thing that came to mind and that was the fact he wanted them dead. All of them, no matter if it had been just one or fifty. He knew better though. Kirkpatrick would laugh in his face and walk right out the door leaving Nick with the bill.

“I guess I want to find out why…”

Chris laughed. “These creatures aren’t going to sit down and have a heart to heart with you boy. They don’t give two rats’ asses what they’ve done or what they will do in the future. If I find out who killed your family, you need to have a plan. A solid, reasonable plan.”

Nick took a deep inhale of breath and held it a moment. Finally, he let it out and nodded. “What do you suggest?”

Leaning back in the seat, Christopher stroked his facial hair and stared out the window. He seemed to be thinking and Nick was sure not to move a muscle in fear of disturbing him. Seconds soon turned into minutes and Nick’s eyes happened to glance at the clock on the far wall. Nearly ten minutes had passed and the hunter hadn’t said a word. Nick was getting restless and a little pissed off that the guy seemed to be wasting his time.

“This is what we’ll do,” Kirkpatrick said suddenly. His move was right in the knick of time as Nick was about ready to stand up and forget the whole thing; or find someone else. “I’ll work on tracking down who did the attack all the way from who planned it and who carried it out. Perhaps I can even find some that didn’t partake but did witness it, you never know there could be some sick fuck vampire that gets his rocks off watching other’s rape and murder.”

Nick’s face twisted. He didn’t want to think about his mother and sister’s possibly getting raped by some thousand year old dead thing. Of course he knew that they hadn’t, but still the thought was enough for him to lose his appetite. It was then the waitress conveniently placed his BLT in front of him. Picking up a fry, Nick shoved it in his mouth and looked back at Chris to see what else he had to say.

“Once I get the names and possible locations we’ll go from there. I know that this is deeply personal for you so once I have the names, I will help you figure out a plan of action if one can be taken. For all we know, these vamps might already be dead. That’d be the best option at the moment.”

Nick nodded. He was feeling a little overwhelmed. A part of him did want to find out why his family had to die, for what purpose but another part of him wanted to get a silver tipped stake and shove it straight through some unbeating hearts. The food and drinks were soon finished with Nick ending up having to pay the bill. The two men shook hands outside of the restaurant and went on their separate ways. Nick started to wonder if going to Kirkpatrick was a good idea.
