Chapter Thirteen

It was late sure, but Nick sped down the road towards his house. He should have never went to Bite. It turned out to be a big waste of time. All he wanted to do now was get home, shower all this gel out of his hair and pull on some flannel pajama pants. Comfort, that’s what he wanted. The white lines on the pavement whirled by and soon enough Nick saw the dirt road to pull off and continue down till he reached his house. Finally, he was home. It took just under thirty seconds to grab his stuff and go inside. Surprisingly, Aaron was up and asked how things went but didn’t receive an answer as Nick jogged up the steps. His things were dropped off in his bedroom and he went straight to the in suite bathroom. The warm water cascaded down Nick’s tan body causing him to groan as his muscles relaxed. He hadn’t realized he was so tense until then. Why had AJ ignoring him caused him to be so mad? Nick wasn’t sure. Quickly finishing up his shower, Nick pulled on some flannel sleep pants and a white tshirt. As it was coming over his head, he heard the doorbell ring and then Aaron’s voice letting him know he had a visitor.

‘It’s almost 2am,’ Nick thought, looking at his alarm clock on his nightstand. ‘Who the hell is here?’

Making his way down the stairs, Nick saw who was standing at the front door and started to shake his head.

“Get the hell out of here,” He said, waving his arm as he walked closer to AJ. Glancing over at his brother, Nick gave him a look to tell the younger boy to leave the room. Aaron looked between the two and then headed to the stairs to go up to his room.

“Nick…please,” AJ pleaded. His hands were pressed together, an ironic pose of praying from a vampire. Nick shook his head.

“I wanted to come apologize,” AJ continued. He took a chance and took a step closer to Nick. When Nick didn’t say anything, AJ stood his ground and watched the human. “It was my night off and I was planning on spending it with you. I wanted to show you around the resort, around Bite and just…talking to you. I don’t know what happened but they thought I needed to help and when my Sheriff gives an order, you can’t disobey it. If you do, you are punished and sometimes punishment can last for a hundred…thousands of years. I’m sorry you were left alone. I’m sorry that Justin bothered you.”

“Bothered me?” Nick spat, looking at the vampire. “He kept me from leaving that place. Justin was being a better host than you, by a long shot. I wasn’t a 100% comfortable going in there, you know that? My family was killed by vampires but I took the chance in hopes that someone I trusted would be there to ease my fears. Unfortunately that didn’t happen and a perfect stranger was able to step up and fill the shoes. So go…we don’t have anything else to say.”

AJ knew that if Nick really wanted him gone, all he had to do was say the word leave and he would be pretty much forced out of the human’s house. Nick didn’t know about that magic word and AJ didn’t have any intentions of telling him, well not any time soon.

“Do you have any idea why I even invited you?” AJ wondered out loud. He kind of shrugged and stuffed his hands into his skinny jeans. The vampire was standing about three feet away from the human in the front entrance, both looking awkward just standing there. Nick didn’t have an answer to his question and merely shrugged his shoulders. “Ever since my nest moved into the area…since I saw you I knew I had to know you. You..something about you just caught my eye and I had to know more. I needed to know more. I snuck out a night to watch you. I started going to the places you frequently visited in hopes of learning more. How do you think I was in the woods that day? Sure I have superb hearing but I couldn’t have made out who was in the woods that far out from my nest. I’m falling Nick….falling in love with you.”

Nick blinked a few times, taking in what he just heard. Then he started to laugh. At hearing this, AJ started to frown.

“That is the biggest bunch of shit I have ever heard. I know for a fact that vampires don’t feel anything,” Nick told him, pointing his finger. “So whatever reason you are stalking me, you need to fucking stop right now before I take a wooden stake and shove it into your unbeating heart. You understand me? You sick fucks are what killed my family and I swear to fucking God that I will never let you touch or hurt my brother or I again.”

Beyond furious now, Nick started to walk away to get himself out of the room with the vampire. Instead he was stopped just short of the doorway with a firm grip on his arm. Looking over his shoulder he could see AJ standing there holding onto him.

“You need to understand Nick,” AJ said softly. “I do love you. I wouldn’t have risked all the punishment I could endure if I didn’t. It’ll make sense someday.”

“Whatever!” Nick shouted. He tried getting the vampire’s hand off of him. “I’m not fucking gay for one thing…and two…you don’t know jack shit about me so love…” He laughed again. “It’s all in your head dead guy.”

Ignoring part of what the human said, AJ shook his head. “A vampire isn’t limited to the sex of the other person when he or she loves. Love isn’t bound by such terms as gay or heterosexual.”

Nick wasn’t listening any more. The alcohol he drank earlier, mixed with his hot shower was making him tired beyond belief. He pushed at AJ again, wanting him gone. It was no use. The vampire’s strength out beat him ten times over, probably more. He started to shake his head over and over and finally shouted, “Leave!”

AJ was sad to hear those words and simply nodded. His hand released Nick’s arm and he turned quietly to head out the door. He took one last look back at Nick before he exited into the night. The look on the vampire’s face was full of sadness and Nick wondered why that ached deep down in the pit of his stomach as he locked the front door and headed up to bed. If he hadn’t been so concerned about the feeling he got when looking at AJ’s sad face, Nick might have seen another face peering in the side window.
