The older man stood there, a bead of sweat dripping down the left side of his face. He was obviously nervous as his fingers wouldn’t stop shaking whenever he would point something out in front of him. He was from the local realtor Bart & Sons, sent because of his great closing deals. Yet Bart hadn’t known, nor was able to warn his senior agent that the buyer was a young man. A young man that wasn’t exactly human. With vampire rights rising, especially in their neck of the woods, the agent wasn’t allowed to show any discrimination. It would either cost him his license or his life. He was having a war inside. His mind was telling him to scream, run as fast as his human legs would carry him. Anybody knew that vampires move faster than the human eye can follow – so it would be in his best interest if he stayed put. Plus this vampire, he was willing to pay $20,000 over the asking price just as a thank you to Bart & Sons for allowing him to see it on such short notice and at night. The vampire had “heard that the property was a hot item and several interested parties had put in offers.” All the agent could do was nod his head. He began to wonder why the Johnson Farm had suddenly peaked the vampire’s interest.
They had started out at the land, the several acreage of crop land that any true farmer would enjoy. It had been used to grow corn at one time, then strawberries another. A few trees were sparsely placed through out the flatness, allowing for shade the workers enjoyed in the summer heat and also to break up the land into fourths so it would be easier to split up tasks with section assignments. At the precent moment, grass was filling in along with some weeds. It hadn’t been used in almost a year – the previous owners had no children to pass the land on to. They had both died within a few months of one another. And both had worked hard all their lives on that land. It was a sad story, for a human, and the vampire had said so. He was attempting to relate to the nervous human beside him, but he honestly didn’t care about the land. He also knew that another vampire had offered the couple money to sell their land, but in an unfortunate accident they had died. That would be a story for another time, and the vampire didn’t want to think about it.
For appearances, he would probably fence the land off and make it a pasture. Cows were the first thing he thought of but then remembered humans complained of their smell from time to time. Horses, yes horses. Humans loved to ride them and the vampire remembered briefly of a time before he was turned that he loved to ride. It was set them. He wouldn’t be a vampire gone farmer, he would own horses.
“Shall we move on to the house then?” The agent asked, swallowing hard. The vampire put his arm out straight, hand pointing towards the path in an indication that the human lead the way. The agent’s hand held the flashlight as he walked up the path. The light would shake every few steps from the nerves rattling the human. It was almost amusing to the vampire.
The ranch style home was up on a slight crest as you walk away from the fields. It was ideal for farmers who had livestock, you would be able to sit on the wrap around porch with your shotgun just waiting for wolves and coyotes to come barging out of the surrounding trees to attack your flock. It was of no interest of the vampire. Though he did keep reminding himself that he was buying this exact piece of property for a purpose, for a human. He had to remember to think like a human.
“This porch goes all the way around the house. A fabulous idea,” He said with a smirk. His friends at his old nest would be laughing at the moment, laughing at his lame cheesiness in order to win over the agent. He ran his cold hand along the railing as they walked up onto the porch. The agent was now going on about when the porch was added on to the house, went on to tell the vampire about the wood used and how often it was repainted – as if either of them cared.
Looking over his shoulder, the vampire stared out to the darkness below. His human would want to sit out on the back porch, sipping sweet tea and talk while the sun set over the far trees. Or would his human want something else? The vampire wasn’t exactly sure. He didn’t exactly know this human on a personal level, but he wanted to. The two walked through the single story house and the vampire listened, or at least attempted to, to the agent talking about the appliances and large rooms. The tour usually lasts about an hour through the house but with the vampire they were done in about twenty minutes. He didn’t need questions asked like the humans nor did he interrupt the agent’s selling speech every few minutes to talk about a fixture or when was the air conditioning unit last serviced. They had gone through the house in a complete circle and were once again at the back door. The agent had stopped talking and took a breath. He saw the vampire hold up a single digit and request a moment alone. All the agent could do was simply nod. He put his hands in the pockets of his slacks and watch the vampire walk away.
The ancient creature walked out of the back room and went through each one once more. This time he was going slow, scanning the walls and inspecting the floors and standing inside the closets for a minute or two. He would lift his head and close his eyes, take in a deep breath and see what he had smelt. There was a faint whiff of another vampire that had been through here. He wasn’t surprised. His survey of the house was another ten minutes before he had located the appropriate room where he could dig a hole and make his sleeping quarters. One room in particular had caught his interest and he would like to see about making it light proof just so he could sit with his human past sun rise – even if only for an hour.
Walking back towards the agent, the vampire smiled and stuck his hand out. The agent struggled getting his pudgy hand out of his pocket and apprehensively put his hand out towards the vampire’s – not having any clue what was going on.
“I’ll take it,” The vampire said as soon as they touched, his smile growing and the agent was able to muster up a smile was well. He would be getting a big pay off from this deal. He shook the vampire’s hand a little more vigorously now, excitement soaring through his veins. He might be able to finally retire now. The vampire brushed the human’s hand off and urged the agent to explain the next steps. It was too late for the agent to head back to the office and get all the dead’s and contracts to sign, so it was agreed upon that they would meet the next evening at sundown at the office to make everything official. As they said their goodbyes, the human practically ran to his car and hit the gas to speed off down the driveway. The vampire smiled, took a deep breath and lifted his head with his eyes closed. The moonlight cast eerily shadows but the vampire was enjoying the quiet. It was time to return to the nest, to his family and intentionally spill the beans about his latest purchase.
It took him only a few minutes to arrive at the large house. He went through the front door, gave a wave to a few other vampires in the area on visit and continued on his search to find his brother. Where he found his brother, he most likely would find another vampire. It was this vampire he wanted to hear his news. An evil smirk spread across his face as he heard his brother’s voice on the other side of the back door. Pushing it open, he stepped out onto the deck.
“Dramatic entrance much?” His brother asked, having had to stop mid sentence to look over at the door.
“I wasn’t sure anybody was out here,” He lied.
“Bull fucking shit,” said the third vampire. “You knew fucking well we were out here. You could hear us talking, hence the fucking reason you stopped right outside the door to listen.”
He had been caught, oh well. He gave a shrug and moved to sit in a seat with the two. Normally, he wouldn’t want to be near his brother’s best friend but tonight was different. He would set aside his hatred for the other vampire in order to get pleasure out of the reaction he was sure to get.
“Justin, what is it exactly you want?” His brother asked, knowing something was up when Justin had taken a seat.
Justin shrugged and pretended to try and hide his smile. “I guess I’m just happy.”
JC looked over at his best friend AJ and bluntly rolled his eyes. He knew his brother was fishing for the question of what happened and JC caved in and asked.
“I bought the Johnson Farm today,” Justin blurted out, adding excitement in his voice just to piss AJ off. It worked.
In a flash, Justin was on his back with AJ on top of him. The tattooed man’s fangs were out and gashes were already weeping across Justin’s arms and neck. Justin took a moment to regain his composure before he started to fight back. He was able to cut AJ across the cheek that started to heal instantly.
“You fucker! I’m going to kill you!” AJ screamed, punching Justin’s head a few times. Justin’s scream was unlike anything humans have ever heard. It was loud enough to get the attention of the vampires inside. A few came out to see what was going on right when JC attempted to pull his best friend off of his brother.
“AJ stop…come on,” He said attempting to coax AJ to give up. JC knew it wasn’t going to happen. It was obvious to the three vampires what was happening. Justin only bought that farm because he had found out AJ was going to. The two have hated each other since they were turned. No one but the two knew the reason why, and no one probably ever would. This stunt Justin pulled just added fuel to the fire. Though, JC didn’t know that there were other reasons behind it. His thoughts and moments were disrupted when a loud voice was heard out on the deck.
“Stop!”
Everyone, even the spectators, froze. Justin’s blood was oozing out onto the wood, AJ was covered in it and he had some bad cuts slowly healing. Everyone’s head and eyes turned to see the sheriff standing at the back door. This was his nest, he owned the house and he was in charge of every vampire within a hundred mile radius. When he spoke, everyone listened. He was older than everyone in his district by at least seven hundred years – more powerful than the three young vampires before him combined.
“What is going on here?” He demanded to know.
JC let go of AJ and stood up straight. It wasn’t his fight to battle and so he didn’t want to be the first to speak. Luckily for him, AJ stood up and wiped the blood from his face. He looked up at his sheriff and spit some of Justin’s blood from his mouth. His eyes were dark and narrow, everyone was on edge because the relatively new vampire was obviously ready to pounce again.
“Your child,” AJ spoke, spitting the word child out at the sheriff. “Is causing problems and getting into affairs that do not concern him.”
The sheriff’s thick eyebrow rose in question, waiting for the young vamp to continue. AJ didn’t want to. He wanted to head to his sleeping quarters and just sit there, pretending Justin Timberlake never entered his world nor gave him the distasteful urge to drive a steak through his own heart. The sheriff commanded it and so AJ must continue.
“Some how he found out I was about to purchase a house and some land. It was the same that I had talked to you about…the one I was going to change over and allow for any extra visitors in our district a place to stay if your nest was full,” AJ continued, making sure to throw in the points of interest to Justin that he had already talked to the sheriff about this purchase. “Justin just informed JC and I that he purchased that same land this evening.”
Justin was still laying on the wood, blood seeping out of him more slowly now. He was a bit dazed but was healing. Unfortunately his hearing was still there and was able to pick up on the fact that he had went above something that his enemy and his father had worked out. He was sure to be punished for this. His only thoughts now were that they wouldn’t find out the house wasn’t exactly his till this evening. His maker was looking at him with those stern dark eyes that scared most people. Justin slowly climbed to his feet, without the aid of his brother. He stood before his maker and bowed his head.
“Is this true?”
Justin nodded, unable to look up. He didn’t want to meet those dark eyes any more tonight. His eyes were staring at his maker’s feet and then they were closed. The sheriff started making people go back inside. The noise of feet shuffling was unusual with vampires but tonight Justin could hear it as clear as anything. None of them wanted to go back inside, they all wanted to stay so they could watch the punishment they were sure the sheriff was going to dish out on to his son.
“Everyone!” The sheriff barked at the remaining two vampires. AJ looked at his best friend and the two slowly went inside. They headed down the hallway to their shared quarters and sat down on the couch. AJ let out a deep breath, as if he was human and closed his eyes. His punishment would come, no doubt about it. He just hoped it wasn’t as severe as Justin’s.
Looking down at his child, the sheriff shook his head. He would need a night to think about punishment for his child for doing something without permission. Justin obviously knew this but he and AJ had issues stemming from hundreds of years ago. That issue alone needed to be worked out.
“Tonight you will go to your sleeping quarters and stay there until sun down tomorrow. You have caused a lot of trouble tonight and disrupted plans I had set out. I need the remaining hours of night to think about what needs to be done. Go,” The sheriff ordered. Justin nodded and headed back into the house quietly. There were eyes on him as he passed through different rooms and then into his own that he shared with a few other vampires that belonged to his maker.
“Kevin…” It was a woman’s voice. The sheriff’s assistant and one of the most desired female vampire in five districts, was behind him. Looking over, he saw Christina standing there in one of her favorite gowns. It would make any human’s heart skip a beat and a growth begin to develop in his pants. The later was happening to the old vampire as he took in her cream colored skin revealed in that outfit. Motioning for her, Kevin pulled her to him.
“My child will need to be punished,” He said softly to her. She was the only one he could talk to about things. They had been lovers even before being turned. They were separated for a long while when Kevin was turned. She had thought her love had been killed then was quick to learn what became of him when she caught him watching her from a tree. He told her everything that had happened. Christina was always a brave, stubborn girl and that night ran to Kevin’s maker. She entered the nest without fear and begged to be turned so she could be with her lover for all eternity. She took a secret vampire oath that night – to be true and follow in Kevin’s command at all times. In a sense, their maker had passed ownership over to Kevin because he didn’t want to bothered with her. The two were like Bonnie and Clyde most of the time, running things together and causing chaos.
“Forget him for tonight,” Christina purred in his ear, her fingers running through his shoulder length brown hair. “Forget everyone else and come to bed.”
His interest was peaked, obviously shown by the large bulge in his pants and so he was quick to pick her up into his arms and carry her down the hall. They had their own private room and when the door was closed, no one was to enter. Kevin didn’t look at anyone as he walked down the hall. He knew his security team would keep things under wraps till dawn. Every vampire they passed was quiet, watching the two go by. As soon as the bedroom door slammed and locked soundly, the guests and housemates began talking again as if their night was never interrupted.
