Friday night, normally Brian would let Nick tend the bar to get more interaction with the customers since it was a busy night. Yet Nick found himself sitting on his back porch watching the sun set while nursing a beer. He’d been working at Brian’s for a few months now and he felt lost without being there. The orders Brian had given him were clear. Stay home and relax. Nick sighed and stood up, about to head inside when he heard some noise in the bushes. Placing the empty beer bottle on the railing, Nick took a step off of the deck and tried peering into the dark woods to see what was out there. With the sun gone, and the mood covered by clouds, Nick was having a hard time making out his hand directly in front of his face.
The noise got louder.
“Hello?” Nick called out.
He was fully aware that he might be walking right into the middle of a scene straight out of a Hollywood horror flick, but curiosity was getting the best of him. Nobody answered him when he called. One shaky step after another, Nick felt a branch whip back and hit him in the bare arm. A hot flash of pain seared through him and he cussed loudly.
“You have no idea how hot you are when you cuss Nick,” A voice said in the darkness.
Nick whipped his head around, trying to look in the direction of the voice. He knew he recognized it but couldn’t place it.
“Who’s there?” He asked, his voice faltering.
Once again, he wasn’t given an answer. His heart started pumping rapidly, sweat building on his palms as he took another step in the direction of the voice.
“Where are you going?” The voice whispered, now behind him.
Nick turned and tried searching through the darkness once more. Adrenaline was racing through his veins and he was ready for whomever it was.
“Brian this isn’t funny,” Nick said, hoping to God it was his best friend.
“Sorry,” The voice said, sounding like it was all around him now. “Wrong answer.”
Fear was building and Nick had no idea what to do.
“Stop fucking around you fucking pussy and show yourself,” He shouted, completely fed up with this little game.
Reaching out, Nick wanted to find a stick or something that he could use as a weapon. Instead of a stick, Nick’s hand grabbed cold flesh. He went to jerk his hand away but was pulled up against more cold flesh. Then he saw those piercing blue eyes illuminating in the night before feeling pain in his neck.
“What the fu…”
Nick wasn’t able to finish his sentence as he passed out. His blood was quickly drained from his body and replaced with blood that was much richer, much older than his own. He started to wake up but not completely. His eyes opened in little slits and he could see the moon above him. The tops of trees were moving and Nick realized he was being carried. Panic was setting in but he was too delirious to speak or move. His eyes rolled back in his head and he once again passed out.
“Don’t worry my Nickolas. You’re save,” The vampire said, carrying the human along an old path in the woods. He soon turned off of it and continued walking till he was deep in the woods. A hole had already been dug and Nick was placed in it gently. The vampire watched him for a split second before going to cover his tracks. He couldn’t risk others following his scent.
Once he was sure nobody could find them, he made his way back to the human. Nick was still passed out, as the vampire hoped. Looking up towards the sky, he saw the mound of dirt that rest in an old tarp. Everything was set.
He crawled into the hole and spooned up to Nick’s warm body. His fingers stroked the human’s soft cheek.
“I couldn’t let him have you. I’m sorry but I know my love can over power that of any other especially that of Alexander McLean. Someday you’ll understand why I did this my love.”
And with those words, Justin pulled the cord that released all the dirt onto them.
