“Now baby you’re just going to have to remember how we rehearsed it,” Kevin whispered fixing the white shirt of Nick’s tuxedo. His eyes lifted and he met Nick’s baby blues. Smiling that reassuring smile Nick needed, Kevin leaned forward and kissed him sweetly.
“You’ll do just fine,” He continued to whisper.
Nick let out a heavy sigh and nodded his head. He could do this. Kevin leaned forward and kissed his lips again. Then there was a knock at the door. It opened slightly and a girl in her early twenties walked in. She smiled at the two and went towards them.
“Everything’s set to go…Courtney is ready and waiting.”
Kevin nodded his head, thanking the girl quickly before she left the room in a flash. Turning back towards Nick, Kevin smiled.
“You ready for this?”
Nick shook his head, making Kevin laugh. Rubbing his back, Kevin ushered Nick towards the door.
“We don’t want her waiting any longer than she has to,” He said with a laugh before exiting out of one of the side doors.
Nick watched Kevin disappear before he turned and opened up another door, walking down the small aisle till he found the first pew. Sitting down all by himself, his parents along with his younger siblings were sitting directly behind him, Nick took a deep breath and looked towards the back of the church. Focusing his eyes on the bride’s maids coming down the walkway, Nick tried to imagine Courtney walking down that same center aisle. She was so beautiful but with all her make up and hair done in that white gown, it was going to take Nick’s breath away. The little flower girl and ring bearer walking down the white cloth. Red rose petals were being dropped while the little boy kept his eye on all the people watching them. Nick smiled; the little boy didn’t seem so sure of what was going. Obviously nobody told him turning practice that there would be a ton of people watching him. His head turned back towards the end of the church. The maid of honor walked by and Nick watched her walk up to the alter.
Then without Nick realizing it, everyone was standing up and that familiar traditional song of Here Comes The Bride started to play. Rising to his feet, Nick looked down the aisle and saw Courtney smiling brightly with her arm linked with Kevin’s.
‘She’s trying her best not to cry,’ Nick thought with a smile, loving how much he knew her.
Kevin kept his face straight ahead, trying desperately not to make any sort of eye contact. But as they neared the front of the church, his eyes shifted and he saw Nick standing there with a proud smile on his face and tears running down his cheeks. Almost on instinct, Kevin wanted to rush to his side and comfort him but he had to finish out his duties he had promised Courtney. Mouthing “I love you” Kevin winked at Nick and turned his attention back towards the nearly crying girl holding onto his arm for dear life. Patting her arm, Kevin whispered, “It’ll be alright. I’m here.”
He walked with her up to the alter where a young man stood waiting proudly. Watching as Kevin stopped in front of the priest, Nick wrung his hands together and sighed. He mentally cursed himself for being such a sap and for crying at a time like this when everyone was watching. But he didn’t care. That little girl up there meant so much to him.
“Who gives this woman to this man?” The priest asked pointing towards Courtney and then the man standing just slightly in front of her.
Kevin cleared his throat quickly and said, “Her father and his husband.”
The priest nodded his head and looked towards his audience. Kevin smiled at Courtney, squeezing her hand slightly.
“I love you daddy,” She whispered kissing his cheek quickly. “Tell Nicky I love him too.”
“Will do sweetie,” Kevin whispered back before he walked over to where Nick was still standing. He let out a sigh and took Nick’s hand.
“Our little girl is all grown up,” He said smiling at Nick. “And she told me that she loves you too.”
Nick smiled through his tears and leaned his head over to rest on Kevin’s shoulder as they watched their only daughter marry the man of her dreams, preparing to start a life of her own.
